Today's the day!
Round 2 of the Obama Skirt Project (Official title: From Here I Saw What Happened And I Could Not Understand) starts today. In fact, it’s going on right now :) I am stuck in my apartment with a stomach flu or some yucky bug… But despite this, all continues to work out well. Last night, my neighbor just happened to be at Wunmi’s studio and was able to bring back my round 2 dress...
090610 Almost there
Just a few more days till Round 2. Almost all the women are in place. Went by Nzinga’s today to show her the new khangas that arrived -straight from Kenya! She decided to trade her blue khangas in for the red ones with the same pattern :) Also, Nsenga convinced her to make dresses instead of tops. Can’t wait to see how they turn out! So far, so good
Today Wunmi and I will meet for the first time. Wunmi is a Nigerian artist, born and raised in the UK. She has lived in Brooklyn for years now and her musical performances are legendary. I was introduced to her by LaRonda, from the Black Rock Coalition. (You remember LaRonda. She introduced me to another amazingly talented musician, Honeychild Coleman, earlier this summer.) Like Honeychild, Wunmi...

2day
I dropped off Kangas with Nzinga, and photographed Jennifer get fitted for an Obama skirt. Jennifer is getting a dress and a skirt from Kebbe -she fell in love with a style in the lookbook. Nzinga and I got into an interesting debate about whether or not being 2nd generation Trinidadian, born in the US counts as African-American. She raised several strong points, and I guess kinda won because the...

Payday. Raise day. 1st raise in almost two years. When I came they had a hiring freeze. Now they’re giving us a raise. Just 3%, but still. That’s progress right? When I came, Bush was in office and the economy was sliding down like there was no tomorrow. There must be some progress…
I never read the papers much or watch tv. Haven’t done it much since September 11th. Long...

But the best part of all is I get to scream at the top of my lungs everyday.
Thanks Yoko!
(You can do it too… in a mike even… Her scream piece is in the atrium)

The work is always the creation of a new reality. So how do you build this new reality that, one way or the other, translates the lived experience?” - Alfredo Jaar
Am going to work on Alfredo’s piece at the Kitchen tomorrow. Come by and say hi!

You know I thought I had gotten used to this whole Obama Skirt thing, but, clearly I was off… Am starting to think folks in my neighborhood may have just gotten used to me wearing the skirt, because since I stepped into Newark airport 6 hours ago, I’ve gotten more looks and comments than I do in 3 or 4 days back in Brooklyn… Hmmm… I am looking forward to not being a...
Rollin home from the Greater NY opening @ PS1
This laid back hipster on the train seat caddy corner to me has lemon yellow acid wash skinny jeans and a patched together windbreaker jacket made out of fabric that looks like clouds floating by on a dish water grey-ish blue sky. I want acid wash jeans! I want grungy black worn out sweaters… clunky black boots and off the shoulder tops… I want skinny jeans to rock with -to rock with...

Never in a Month of Sundays
Did I think I’d meet Martin Dixon (the man behind those superb looking “Live United” ads) and end up on his homepage , on Easter Sunday even…

As you have probably heard many times, I’ve been on a quest as of late to document this project in ways that discourage viewers from thinking that seeing the documentation is the same as experiencing the 365 day piece. So here goes Obama Skirt Documentation #1, designed to be its own completely separate work of art. Hopefully it captures a little bit of how I feel about wearing the dresses.

Secret performance - Stay tuned for details!

2day was the craziest day...
Would you believe I almost met Michelle Obama? I was this close… literally, like 10 feet away.
Not really down about it… getting this close is better than never getting close at all…
Oh, so the back story is I read an article where Michelle was advocating for the Arts and I got this idea in my head to do a performance art piece @the White House. Definitely not one of my goals...

Never in my dreams about our first black president did I picture my mom being on his/her mailing list…
new styles!
Today I threaded an elastic string through the bottom seam on the Mali skirt and tada: bubble top. With an optional ruffled trim even…

Went with Charmaine Bee and Kenya Robinson to see Marina Abramovic speak… We looked like 3 birds of a feather: Brown skinned, smiling, trim, happy nappy, clever, creative, and radiating sunshine ;) It was nice not to feel like the only one… Marina was surprisingly comedic. She’s also planning on remaining silent for the entire duration of her 3 month piece @ MoMA, even when...

Lagos halter dress
Rehearsal went great. Full of surprises, as always. Almost picked up some free clothes, but thought better of it. I know exactly what I’m going to be wearing until July. No need to pick up things that don’t coordinate.
Blah
Blah. Germs. Go away little germs, go-o-o-o so very far a-away little ge-er-er-erms… To the tune of Marlena Shaw’s “run away little boy” even.
